Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was one of the most prolific playwrights and poets of 18th-century Germany. This lovely set of five volumes of Goethe's works was published in New York in 1882 and included some of his most famous works, such as Faust and The Sorrows of Young Werther.

The boards are bound in dark green cloth with a gilt image and title on the spine. The top edge of the text block is also in gilt. There is rubbing and slight soiling on the upper and lower boards, some volumes more than others. The spine also has rubbing. The Autobiography volume has a more predominant bump on the spine. The text blocks are tight and secure. The owner's name is on the upper endpaper in ink, but the pages are unmarked otherwise. The volumes have numerous woodcut engravings throughout.
