Discovery of the Yosemite and the Indian War of 1851
Discovery of the Yosemite and the Indian War of 1851
By Lafayette Houghton Bunnell, M.D.
This is the fourth edition of Lafayette Bunnell's retelling of the Yosemite Valley discovery alongside the Mariposa Battalion in 1851. Bunnell, an American doctor, writer, and explorer, gained recognition for his role in the Battalion, which was the first group of non-native people to enter Yosemite Valley. Although their main objective was to track down Native American tribal leaders involved in recent attacks on American settlements, Bunnell took the opportunity to thoroughly explore the Valley, giving names to many of its natural features. His book, "Discovery of the Yosemite and the Indian War of 1851," originally published in 1880, recounts his exploration and the Battalion's actions during that time.
The book is in good condition, bound in original cloth with gilt titles and tooling to the spine and front panel. There is wear to the extremities and slight fraying to the board's corners and the head and tail of the spine. The text block contains illustrations with engravings and a map. One of the owner's inscriptions is written on the front free endpaper. On the title page, there is a blue stamp with the number and name of an owner's private library collection. There is also an embossed stamp of the same private library indication (Private Library W. W. Guth) on the title page and last page of the book. All other pages are unmarked, and the binding is secure.
